What is the Neurofluency Initiative?

The Neurofluency Initiative is dedicated to increasing understanding of stuttering through neuroscience. By translating scientific research on speech and the brain into accessible resources, the initiative aims to help students, families, and educators better understand the biological foundations of speech disorders. Founded by a neuroscience graduate who grew up with a stutter, Neurofluency combines lived experience with scientific research to reduce stigma and promote awareness through a more informed understanding of speech disorders.

Why understanding stuttering matters.

Stuttering is widely misunderstood. Many people assume it is caused by nervousness or lack of confidence, when in reality research increasingly shows that stuttering involves differences in the brain networks responsible for speech timing and motor coordination. These misconceptions can lead to stigma and a worsened self concept in many. By sharing insights from neuroscience research, the Neurofluency Initiative aims to promote a more accurate and accessible understanding of speech disorders, highlighting the complex biology underlying human communication.

The Science of Speech

Speech is one of the most complex motor behaviors the brain performs. Producing even a single sentence requires precise coordination between multiple brain systems responsible for motor control, timing, and auditory feedback.

Here, you can explore the neuroscience behind speech such as:

• Brain regions involved in speech
• Neural mechanisms of stuttering
• Genetics of speech disorders
